Wild Unlocked
at home or outdoors, at your own pace

Notice nature, record it, and learn as you go

Wild Unlocked is a nature reporting and learning app. Spot the plants, fungi and animals around you, from your garden or window to a local wood, record what you find to help citizen science, and find out more about each one. It's in private beta, and Sam would love your feedback.

Sam's story

Why I started Wild Unlocked

Hi, I'm Sam, and I've loved the outdoors my whole life. But something was always missing: knowledge and understanding.

I've always spent time outside, but I just passed through, appreciating what I was looking at while wishing I knew more. I wanted to identify the plants, fungi and animals around me, and to understand the kind of place I was in, whether woodland, ancient woodland or a Site of Special Scientific Interest. I believe that knowing more about your surroundings makes you stop and appreciate them more.

That's why I started Wild Unlocked: a relaxed app for noticing and learning about nature, at your own pace. You can learn about a place before you visit, research from home, and record what you find along the way, contributing to citizen science, because all of us can help gather data for science.

Not everyone always gets the chance to be outside, so whether your goal is to be more present outdoors or to learn from home, Wild Unlocked is here for both.

I'd love to bring the joys of nature to more people. There's lots still to do to make this app what I feel is missing, so if you have any feedback or suggestions, please let me know!

Your privacy: Wild Unlocked is run by Sam Compton, a UK sole trader, who is responsible for your details. Contact: privacy@wildunlocked.com. We use your email, and your first name if you give it, only to send what you ticked, because you agreed to it, and we keep a record of that agreement. We never sell your details or share them for marketing. Your details are stored with Supabase in London, emails are sent by Brevo, and Cloudflare runs an invisible spam check on this form. We keep your details until you unsubscribe (use the link in any email, or email us), or for 24 months after we last contacted you. You can ask to see or delete them, and you can complain to the ICO (ico.org.uk).

About the app: accounts are for adults (18+). Young explorer is used together with a grown-up on their own phone or tablet. It needs no account, a grown-up's PIN is needed to leave it, and what's recorded in it stays on that device. GBIF nature look-ups go through our server and only send a rough area (about 500 m), and the county used by Ask AI is worked out on your phone. Full privacy policy
